Tech Lead

The road from Senior

I've been working as a Senior Frontend Engineer for several years now at different companies. I tended to shy away from "the next step" as that usually meant not writing code. Often, it meant attending more meetings.

At the same time, I also enjoy mentoring and trying to give people opportunities to do work that they find meaningful or fun. This ties into a recent change for me - I've joined a new team in work, and I've taken up the mantle of Tech Lead.

Technically, it's not an officially recognised position on the road for an individual contributor such as myself, and I'm usually wary of such things if it means additional responsibilities. This time, though, I'm curious enough to see what it means. It's a new challenge with a brand-new project and a fresh team. I'm part of putting the team together via interviews, which I last did a long time ago. I'm finding it a nice change of pace, and I'm putting some learnings into practice.

Things are starting to take shape. I'm hoping we'll make some hires in the coming weeks, and we can start getting stuck into some code.

In the meantime, I've been listening to this song on repeat.
