My Site Turns Ten
Despite many migrations and a domain change, it persists
This year marks ten years of this site's existence. Technically, it's been longer since the first domain was registered and a placeholder sat there, but it's ten years since actual content appeared on it.
It's been a while - I may be off with some details - but here's how I think it went:
- Jekyll
- WordPress
- Ghost
- Craft CMS
- Hugo
- Eleventy
- Ghost (present day)
I've always viewed my site as a playground. To further this, I ventured into PHP and Node to create custom plugins and make this site my own. There are no limits.
This became a chore. I don't usually mind dev-ops-type stuff, and it was fun setting up a server, but I got distracted. I didn't write as much custom code as I thought I would. With that, it was back to static site generators. Hugo was good, but the syntax drove me a bit mad sometimes. That's when Eleventy entered the picture, and it's a blessing, to be honest. It's very flexible and easy to upgrade, and you're not restricted in what you can accomplish.
So why am I back to Ghost? I enjoy the composition experience. Pushing to a repo is perfectly fine; I wanted to focus on the writing for a while. That being said, I'm planning on making my own theme at some stage when I get the time.
Haha, I'll never get time. I'll always find time to migrate the content and set up a new site. Funny how that works.
